“The electromagnetic field is the perfect secret agent:  you cannot see it, you cannot smell it, you cannot hear it, and its effects are slow but relentless”. By Volter Hertenstein, MP Bavarian Parliament

Assoc. Prof Olle Johansson

Assoc. Prof Olle Johansson speaking at the conference on ‘The Health Effects of Electromagnetic Fields’ at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club on 18/11/2010 said ‘Do not believe for a second that mobile phone and wireless internet and so on are safe because they are not.  They interfere with normal brain function, learning and memory, fertility, cancer risks and have been shown to shatter DNA in cells’.

The Seletun Scientific Statement

The Seletun Scientific Statement released on 3/2/2011 in Norway is the result of intensive discussions by scientists from various countries in November 2010.  It’s recommendations are based on a large body of research showing harmful effects of electromagnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation at levels far below international standards.  Based on scientific and public health reports, the Scientists recommended new standards, the restriction of wireless technologies, mobile phone / wireless free zones in public places and on public transport, use of wired landline phones, avoidance of mobile phones and cordless phones.  (Note that Japan currently does not allow people to use mobile phones in trains).

The Scientists concluded that the existing evidence justifies a ‘new approach to protection of public health’, and that ‘Current US and ICNIRP standards for microwave radiation and wireless technologies are extremely inadequate’.  The Scientists also stated that ‘SAR (specific absorption rate) is not a good indicator of phone safety’.  Prof. Yuri Grigoriev, Chairman of the Russian National Committee on Non-ionising Radiation Protection said ‘Pregnant women and children of all ages should avoid using cell phones and cordless phones given the health effects we are seeing already’.

The Seletun scientists recommend ‘against the use of wireless computers, baby-monitors, smart meters and similar technologies, WI-FI routers, DECT phones and any other wireless devices which produce RF and microwave radiation emissions that will affect millions of people and babies in their homes’.  Among the key recommendations of the panel is a reduction in international standards.  ‘Current US and ICNIRP (International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection) standards for radiofrequency and microwave radiation from wireless technologies are entirely inadequate, said Professor Olle Johansson who is a contributor to this statement.

For emissions from electrical sources, the Statement recommends a magnetic field limit of 1 milliGauss (mG) equivalent to 0.1 microTesla (µT) averaged over 24 hours for all new buildings and from new electrical equipment.  This limit is based on findings of risks for leukemia, brain tumors, Alzheimer’s, ALS, sperm damage and DNA strand breaks.  The limit is two thousand times lower than the new limits introduced by the ICNIRP late in 2010 and which apply only to short term exposure.  For communications technology the Statement also recommends far stricter limits than in current international standards:-

  1. It recommends whole-body exposures of no more than 0.000033 Watts per kilo for long-term exposure
(compared to 0.8 W/kg allowed by current international guidelines which only cover short-term
  2. For radiation from antennas, towers, mobile phones, TVs, WI-FI, etc., it recommends exposures of no
more than 0.17 microwatts per square cm (µW/cm²), compared to the current 470µW/cm².
  3. Even tighter limits are needed for vulnerable populations such as foetuses, children, pregnant women,
the elderly and the sick, says the report.

The Seletun Statement urges authorities to take action now based on current scientific evidence for ‘potential global health risks’.

Professor Girish Kumar

Professor Girish Kumar of the Engineering Department, Institute of Technology in Bombay, India has submitted a 30 page report on mobile technology to the Indian Department of Telecommunications called ‘Report on Cell Tower Safety’.  It outlines the risks of radiation from mobile phones and their antennas.  Professor Kumar says that India’s standards allow the equivalent exposure to a person of spending 19 minutes a day inside a microwave oven – that is the amount of radiation which a person would receive from just one source, so if exposed to multiple sources of radiation from towers, etc., then it would be higher. He says millions of people are suffering because of the extremely high ‘safety limit’ of exposure to microwave radiation adopted by the Government in his country.  Kumar’s report contains an extensive list of health problems caused by exposure to mobile phones and base station radiation.  These include:-

  1. Breaches of the blood-brain barrier, causing albumin to leak from blood vessels
  2. Reduced fertility
  3. DNA damage, including DNA damage to sperm, which can increase the risk of genetic changes in the next generation.
  4. Removal of calcium ions from cell membranes which increases the likelihood that they will tear and leak. When calcium ions leak into fluid outside the cell, they can ‘promote the growth of tumors’.
  5. Activation of the body’s stress response (heat shock proteins).  ‘This means that the body recognizes these electromagnetic radiations as a potential harm’.
  6. Skin problems
  7. Immune problems – ‘EMF’s degrade the immune system and stimulate various allergic and inflammatory responses’.  They increase mast cells which are responsible for itching, pain and edema.
  8. Ear problems – ‘long-term and intensive mobile phone use for more than four years and for longer periods than 30 minutes in a day – these people are at a higher risk of developing hearing loss, which cannot be reversed’.
  9. Eye damage, including the possibility of uveal melanomas (tumors of the eye).
  10. The weakening of pelvic bones among men who carry mobile phones in their hip pockets.
  11. Salivary gland tumors
  12. Reduced levels of the antioxidant hormone melatonin.
  13. Sleep problems
  14. Neurodegerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.
  15. Increased risk of cancers
  16. Interference with pace-makers and other medical implants.
  17. Damage to animals and plants.

Professor Kumar says ‘it is important for telecommunications companies to admit the risks of this technology’. Download this report from

Professor Martin Blank, a cell biologist from Columbia University says ‘When there are electromagnetic signals in the air, the cells start to react as if there was a harmful stimulus around’.  ‘The cells are saying they are hurting and this happens at a low level of exposure and across multiple frequencies.  DNA is actually made like a fractal antenna, explained Dr. Blank.  The multiple coiling of DNA in order to compress it into a tiny nucleus causes it to have the property of fractals and fractals respond to a wide range of frequencies’, he said.  He said ‘different parts of DNA structure react to different frequencies’. He has succeeded in isolating parts of DNA that respond in electromagnetic fields.

Dr. Don Maisch in his recently published PhD thesis says International standards on EMR and RFR including microwave radiation are inadequate and are the product of an inappropriate approach to standards setting.  Maisch says that EMR standards have been constructed to accommodate the communications and electronic industries, and not to protect public health.  He refers to the development of the two main international standards developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).  Maisch was a member of the committee that developed the safe standard for electromagnetic fields in Australia, but was rejected by authorities.  He says ‘these processes have been prone to political manipulation and conflicts of interests leading to various scientific perspectives being marginalised with reluctance on the part of regulators to make decisions that might inconvenience industry interests’.  He says the current standards only consider heating effects of radiation and ignores relevant evidence.  He says all possible health hazards that are a consequence of RF technology should be included regardless of the economic consequences of that assessment’.  (Dr. Maisch’s thesis is at

Senator Chip Shields together with five Republican and Democratic MP’s in the State of Oregan, US have introduced a bill on 2/2/2011 that warning labels about the nonthermal (nonheating) effects of radiation from all mobile phones sold in that state be placed on radiation emitting items for sale.

The label may read:  WARNING:  ‘This is a radiation emitting device that has non thermal biological effects for which no Government safety guildelines have yet been established. This radiation emitting device has not been pre market tested for safety. Users, especially children and pregnant women should keep them away from the head and body’.

The Oregan bill follows the publication and distribution of an 83 page document called ‘The Legislator’s Guide to Warning Labels on Cell-phones and the ‘Layman’s Guide to the Science Behind Nonthermal Effects from Wireless Devices and Infrastructure’ by the American Association for Cell Phone Safety.

The Association aims at protecting people from harmful radiation which is emitted from cell phones, WIFI, cell towers and antennas.  The authors say that current standards do not protect against non thermal effects of radiation, yet it can cause brain tumours, birth defects, dementia, leukemia, lymphomas, genetic damage and damage to sperm.  In 2010 the City of San Francisco introduced legislation requiring retailers to provide SAR (specific absorption rate) details with all mobile phones on sale, however a low SAR does not protect against nonthermal effects or modulation says Liz Barris from the Cell Phone Safety Association.

Epidemiological Evidence for a Health Risk from Mobile Phone Base Stations, by Khurana, V., Hardell L., Everaert J., Bortkiewicz A., Carlberg M., Ahonen M., (Int J Occup Env Health:16-3, p 263-267, 2010.)

Cancers around the Vatican - A report leaked to the Italian Press in July 2010 produced by ‘La Stampa’ has found increased risks of cancer among people living near the Vatican’s transmitter towers north of Rome.  The report says there is an increased risk of leukemia and lymphomas among children and an increased risk of dying of cancer among people who have been living within nine kilometres of the antennas and towers for ten years or more.  The report was commissioned by an Italian Court in 2005 following years of complaints from people living in the town of Cesano near the transmitter towers.  The Vatican originally stated that its’ emissions complied with international standards, but it eventually agreed to comply with much stricter levels required by Italian authorities.  (Catholic News Service 14.07.10.)

Professor Henry Lai and B. Blake Levitt published a paper in the journal ‘Environmental Reviews’ in November 2010 suggesting radiation from base stations and other RF transmitters should be minimized.  They called for biologically based standards and regular monitoring of emissions from base stations as ‘people are reporting symptoms near cell towers and in proximity to other RF-generating sources including wireless computer routers, WiFi systems which appear to be classic microwave sickness syndrome’, they say.  Levitt and Lai refer to a study on US staff in a Moscow Embassy.  They were exposed to RF radiation at work over a period of some years.  The exposed workers developed tumors, skin rashes, neurological and reproductive problems, changes in blood chemistry, irritability, depression, concentration problems and loss of appetite.  These exposures were hundreds of times below current international standards and similar to what many people receive today.  (B. Blake Levitt and Henry Lai, Environ Rev 18:369-95, 2010.  (

A Japanese family has staged a protest against communications company NTT Docomo as a result of health problems they experienced after a base station was installed 250 meters from their home.  They reported symptoms of itch, headache, nausea, fatigue, and eye pain.  In July 2010 the family left their home in Nagano and went 215kms to the telco company’s headquarters in Tokyo where they were joined by other people with symptoms, and demanded a radiation free zone around their homes.

Dr. John Holt, a leading Australian cancer specialist and founder of the Radiowave Therapy Research Institute has found that EMR creates damage by acting on the body’s system for metabolising food and producing energy.  Anaerobic activity occurs in diseases such as cancer and diabetes which have both increased dramatically in recent years.  Dr. Holt found that people exposed to EMR from electrical and communications technology have high rates of diabetes and said
“A world of incurable diabetics is a horrific future”.  2008.

German YShield distributor for Victoria, David Mould in Hawthorn is making a good living from selling products that shield the public from microwave radiation.  He has painted many homes with the special paint which stops the microwaves from penetrating houses.  These products are extremely expensive so people only use them when absolutely necessary. Contact or phone him on 03 90779842. He can also tell you of the thousands of sick people and many sad stories he has encountered. In 2010 David was asked by a woman from Beechworth in Victoria, who had signed a contract with a Telco for a tower on her property, about shielding the property from the microwaves as she could no longer stay on her land.  Even her trees were burnt and dying from the pulsed radiation.

Canadian Current Affairs Program 16:9 reported serious concerns about the health risks of the radiation emitted from wireless computer networks.  Children, while at school in WiFi’d class rooms are complaining of uncomfortable symptoms that disappear when they go home.  These include dizziness, extreme headaches, pressure in the head, foggy vision, weakness, not being able to think clearly, and also heart problems such as chest pain, the skipping of heart beats and accelerated heart beats.  Mr Palmer of the Safe School Committee for Simco County at the Parliamentary Hearing on 28.10.10 in Canada said ‘There is a public health disaster unfolding among children in Simco County’.  Mr. Palmer said that children are experiencing chronic headaches, dizziness, vertigo, cognitive dissassociation, heart problems, cardiac arrests and are passing out.

Professor David Fancy of Brock University issued a news release in September 2010 warning staff about the risks of WiFi.  ‘I think as educators, we are fooling ourselves if we are thinking we can just unroll wireless network after wireless network and assume that everything is going to be OK for our students’, he told Postmedia News.

Wireless Laptops:  Dr. C. Avendaro and team from Argentina tested siemen samples from 15 men. They found that sperm exposed to Wi-Fi laptops had lower motility and greater immobility and DNA fragmentation.  They say ‘we speculate that keeping the laptops (WiFi mode) on the lap near the testes results in decreased male fertility.

In Switzerland researchers have reported the case of a 12 year old boy who developed a condition known as ‘toasted skin syndrome’ after playing computer games on a laptop for several hours a day for several months.  The condition has been reported in ten other people and appears to be caused by the heat of the unit.  The researchers warn users to keep the computer away from their body or to use a heat resistant material under the laptop.  (Arnold, A et al Pediatrics, Nov 5 vol 126, 2010.)

The Copenhagen Resolution

Scientists declared concerns about wireless technology in the Copenhagen Resolution signed on 9th October 2010.  The resolution was endorsed by the signatories at the conference ‘The Shadow-side of the Wireless Society’.  The resolution called for:

  1. A considerable lowering of guidelines and exposure to wireless microwave radiation, with a maximum peak-level of 0.6V/m as recommended by the BioInitiative Report of August 2007.
  2. Information and official warnings for the general public, regarding the health risks from wireless microwave radiation.
  3. Warning labels on wireless radiation emitting products and a determination by the producers to design such products to emit as little radiation as possible, and emit radiation only when necessary.
  4. Restrict children’s access to and use of wireless radiation emitting products.
  5. Electromagnetic Hyper Sensitivity must be officially recognized as a functional impairment.
  6. Enable and respect local community influence on the location of wireless base stations and a full disclosure of all existing and planned wireless base station locations.
  7. Minimize wireless radiation exposure in public spaces.
  8. Establish White-Zones: low-radiation communities where Electromagnetic Hyper Sensitive people can live as well as providing financial support for shielding from wireless radiation in existing homes.
  9. Promote health safe alternatives to wireless technology.

Professor Olle Johannson from Karolinska Institute in Sweden is also concerned about the safety of WiFi technology, saying Radiofrequency radiation has biological and biomedical effects at very low exposure levels far below the current exposure guidelines. (Postmedia News, 01.09.10.)  Public debate is focused mainly on the carcinogenic properties of wireless radiation, he said on the documentary ‘Wake up Call’.  However, ‘other effects that are reported in the scientific literature may be much more striking, much more serious and may come much earlier’.  ‘These include effects on immunity, fertility, mental function (sleep, memory, concentration and headaches) and some of these can occur in minutes’, he said.

Dr M. RepacholiAccording to both (which is an extensive French website) and the world renowned highly regarded British medical journal ‘The Lancet’, The WHO’s Dr M. Repacholi betrayed the obligations of his office when he was in charge of the WHO’s study programme on electromagnetic fields, he was also ex-President-Founder of ICNIRP.  He is considered corrupt, as he betrayed the obligations of his position and must be brought to justice as he travelled far and wide in the name of the WHO to convince national institutions to adopt unrealistic limits for artificial EMFs, limits that do not protect the public, as has now been scientifically proven, and now we are paying the consequences of giving free reign to Dr Repacholi. He was asked to leave the WHO shortly after he set the standards that don’t protect anyone. He then took up a position with a Utility company.   (pdf file) To see a picture of Dr. Repacholi, go to Practical_Health_France_Dupont_Mobile_phones_15042008_Add_ WHO_Repacholi_legislation.
The WHO has finally announced its research projects for investigating the health effects of microwave radiation.  It recommends epidemiological studies to investigate RFR effects.

THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY – litigation on the way

A leading New York business consultant Gloria Vogel said, in the September 2010 issue of Business Insurance’that the insurance industry could soon be facing massive compensation claims from workers who are being overexposed to high frequency radiation from communications towers as they work.  Vogel says that ‘such workers are clearly being put in harm’s way on a daily basis as they are routinely overexposed to RF radiation in violation of the Federal Commissions RF human exposure limits’.  Vogel, who is Managing Director of Vogel Capital Management, suggests that RF radiation could be the ‘next asbestos’ for the insurance industry with an estimate of around 250,000 workers affected each year in the US.  Many insurance policies already exempt mobile phone radiation but these exemptions will not cover people who are overexposed at work.  The Supreme Court of Alaska ruled in 2007 that a worker who suffered memory loss, sleep problems, depression, and other symptoms received a disability award.

The US town of Hempstead on Long Island has introduced tough new restrictions on the siting of mobile phone antennas.  The decision was made on the basis of preserving quality of life – as federal legislation prevents local authorities from rejecting applications on the basis of health concerns.
(Associated Press, 23.09.10.)

A Mobile Phone Tower was refused due to health problems in Santa Fe in the US.  In January 2011 the Board of Adjustment refused an application by telecommunications company AT&T to install 12 antennas on a church.  The refusal was based on planning legislation which stipulated the city should ‘provide remedies for the public health and safety impacts of communications towers’.  (

In Israel, a joint committee has announced a program to minimize children’s exposure to mobile phone radiation.  The committee endorsed recommendations by experts chaired by Prof Siegal Sadetzki.  It recommended programs in schools to teach children about the risks of mobile phone radiation and precautions for reducing exposure.  These included texting and using ear phones.  It further recommended mobile phone free zones in schools and the installation of landline phones in schools for use by pupils.

In Switzerland, the Telecommunications Giant Swisscom announced the signing of a contract with the city of St. Gallen to construct a city-wide fibre optic network (safe landline type). This network will provide wired telecommunications services such as phones, internet and television – to all homes and businesses in the city.  In its announcement, Swisscom refers to this network as the ‘communications technology of the future’.  The roll out has begun and expects to have 80% completed by 2014.
(Press Release, 13.10.10)

In China Huang Shuying, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party and Yen Shiu-Lan, head of a community action group, held a press conference demanding action to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields.  They say the state owned electricity company is exposing people to dangerous levels.  Shiu-yin said that she experienced severe health problems after Taipower constructed a substation near her home.  She has measurerd fields of 95mG in her home. (The Scientific world has proven exposure to 2mG or more can cause cancers and leukemia). The Government has paid to have fields from Taipower’s network reduced to 5mG in office buildings and the women demand the same rights for the community.
China Post, 16.10.10.)

The Welsh Government in the UK recommended precautions to restrict children’s use of mobile phones.  On 13/7/2010 the Government announced the publication of two five page leaflets for primary and secondary students which gives advice on mobile phone safety.  The Chief Medical Officer for Wales, Dr. Tony Jewell said ‘Protecting the health of the young people of Wales is a priority’.

The High Court of Delhi in India requested on 31/5/10 that the Telecommunication Ministry and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi form a committee to evaluate the health risks of mobile phone radiation from antennas and towers.  The report says that ‘concerns of health problems caused by radiation cannot be ignored’.  The decision follows a survey of radiation levels at 100 locations in Delhi by the Cogent company which claimed it found high and potentially dangerous levels of radiation in many locations with levels reaching as high was 4,000mW/m² in some places.
(Hindustan Times 01.06.10.)

In Brazil, PhD student Adilza Condessa Doda, in her doctoral thesis, showed how radiation from mobile phone towers can contribute to cancer.  Doda identified the addresses of nearly 5,000 people who had died from breast cancer, prostate, lung, kidney and liver cancers in the city of Belo Horizonte.  She found that over 80% of the deaths occurred within 500 meters of antennas and towers.  Doda recommended in her thesis that the Brazilian Government adopt stricter emissions standards and ban wireless technology in schools, child care centres, homes and other sensitive areas.
(People Daily 11.07.10.)

The Health Committee of the Canadian House of Commons released its report on how to address health issues of radiofrequency radiation following public hearings.  The report was published in December 2010 – see recommendations at: (

San Francisco in the US introduced legislation that requires retailers to disclose radiation levels on all mobile phones for sale.  It was introduced by Mayor Gavin Newsom in May 2010 and endorsed by the City’s Board of Supervisors on 15th June 2010. Mayor Newsom said ‘this legislation will encourage mobile telephone manufacturers to redesign their devices to function at lower radiation levels’.  He said Government agencies and scientific bodies in the European Union (EU) and Israel have recognised the potential harm of long-term exposure to radiation emitted from cell phones and as a result have issued warnings about their use’.

US Congressman, Dennis J Kucinich has proposed a bill that will require warning labels for mobile phones with information about SAR levels, an update of the ‘decades-old’ standard and a national research program to study the health effects of mobile phone radiation.  Kucinich referred to the findings of the Interphone mobile phone study and said ‘Those people using their cell phones only 30 minutes per day or more were found to have a 40% increased risk of a type of brain tumour called glioma’.  ‘This risk increases to 96% if the phone is used mostly on one side of the head’.
(Media Release, 30.06.10.)

The Government of Monaco has adopted precautions to reduce people’s exposure to high frequency radiation from communications antennas and towers.  It has introduced limits of between 4 and 6 volts per meter.  For a comparison, the International Commission for NonIonizing Radiation Protection (ICNRP) maintain limits of 42V/m for GSM telephony (900MHz); and 61V/m for 3G (2400MHz), 03.12.2010.

Most people know that it is dangerous to be the tallest protrusion on a landscape in thunderstorm conditions.  During the past seven years there has been a huge outcry from the residents and factories close to newly erected telecommunications towers and antenna structures.   Some are built on existing buildings and others on free standing poles.  They found that the lightning density has greatly enhanced since either the tower or antenna was constructed.  The enormous current involved with the lightning flash may destroy the entire power and communications networks in the particular building, and adjoining buildings.  Direct lightning or side flashes cause damage at a very rapid rate so that once your building is lightning struck it is very unlikely that you could prevent the damage to equipment and human injuries, however you may still be able to prevent the spreading fire by acting quickly.  The telco structures are usually installed with a lightning protection system, however these people say those systems don’t stop the surges of electricity which wipe out their equipment.

Dr. Chandima Gomes from the University of Colombo says she has received hundreds of calls from people complaining about the increased and severe lightning strikes which they say are now so prolific and immense.  There is also the problem of ground potential rise due to the earthing out systems of the towers not being able to cope, which can cause equipment damage and potential related injuries in the neighbourhood as the power from the lightning travels underground up to 200 meters away and can come up into houses or whatever else is around the area.
In the US, according to Jim Covert who is Vice President of Technical Operations at Powertel, their radiation towers are hit repeatedly by direct and indirect lightning.  The Company’s network includes middle and north Florida and parts of lower Alabama, which have high-moisture areas built on sandy soils and quartz and which ‘are like lightning rods’, he says.  Covert says ‘if you have electronics up in the sky you are asking for trouble’. (

Steve Chaires, who owns a storage business facility says that over the past ten years, the radiation tower that is adjacent to his eleven acre facility is struck on a regular basis.  Every time it gets struck we lose equipment, whether it is alarm panels, keypads or cameras which are all grounded.  ‘We have gone to great lengths to surge protect and ground everything’.  We have ground rods at the keypads that go 150 feet deep and meg out at .0005 (which is as good as it gets) and still lose keypads, he said.  Chaires says that when a cell tower is struck by lightning, it dissipates its electrical charge into the ground, from there it is picked up in any or all of the underground low voltage wiring and follows it to your camera, keypad, or alarm, etc.  Regardless of what a cell company or telco is willing to tell you and how much they are willing to pay you to have a lease on your property, it won’t come close to paying for all the equipment that will get fried.  We have estimated our loses over the past ten years to be in excess of $150,000.  That averages out to at least $15,000 per year.  So, if you are considering a cell tower lease, you had better make sure you get more that $2,000 per month! The Israeli Ministry of Health has warned consumers to limit their use of cordless phones in the wake of the Interphone Mobile Phone Study.  The Ministry advised that cordless phones emit radiofrequency radiation similar to mobile phones.  They suggest it is best to use a landline rather than a cordless phone, or if using a cordless phone then:-

  1. Use the speaker function.
  2. Keep the base unit away from bedrooms and other rooms where people spend long periods of time.
  3. Return the handset to the cradle when phone is not in use.

These recommendations were compiled by Prof. Sigal Sadetzki, who conducted the Israeli arm of the Interphone Study.  Her study found a higher rate of salivary gland tumours among mobile phone users.  (Haaretz, 22.07.10.)

Dr. Lennart Hardell and team from Orebro University in Sweden explained the Interphone study’s outcome on mobile phones and brain tumors.  Hardell’s team re-analysed the data in their previous research and only applied the criteria used by the Interphone project.  To do this they:-
(1)  Only considered tumour patients aged 30 to 59 years.
(2)  They disregarded the subjects’ cordless phone use.
(3)  They considered ‘high’ exposure to be 16 to 40 hours (ie 30 minutes a day over 10 years).
Therefore the analysis shows that the Interphone study results under estimate the risk of brain tumors by not including a wider age spread, disregarding cordless phone use and classifying 16 to 40 hours as ‘high’ use. (Hardell, L et al, Int J Epidemiol, Dec 2010)

Dr. John Bithell from the Childhood Cancer Research Group of Oxford University also has short comings of the Interphone Study.  Bithell says ‘the study does not demonstrate that phone tower radiation is not implicated in childhood cancer, in fact, it does not really demonstrate anything at all’.  (Editorial:  Bithell JF Childhood cancer and proximity to mobile phone masts, British Medical Journal, 2010;340:c3015.)

Doctors Elizabeth Cardis and Siegal Sadetzki, who contributed to the 13 Country Interphone Mobile Phone study published in May 2010 say in their January 2011 paper that indications of an increased risk in high and long term mobile phone users from Interphone and other studies are of concern.  Dr. Cardis was the principal investigator of the project and Sadetzki was the author of this paper which showed that mobile phone users had a higher than usual rate of salivary gland tumors.  The researchers identified a number of short comings of the Interphone Research Project e.g. most subjects were comparatively low users, tumors in the head were looked at rather than tumors near the ears on side of the head, and a large number of people refused to participate. (E. and Sadetzki, S, Occup, Environ Med, Jan 2011.)

Rash Bihari Dubey and Colleagues from India reviewed the research on mobile phones and effects on the body, particularly brain tumors and concluded standards should be tightened to protect public health.  They studied the Interphone Project and the independent Hardell research and found both showed increased risks of brain tumors on the side of the head used for calls by people who had used mobile phones for ten years or more.  The Researchers concluded ‘People should be very restrictive with using mobile phones as there is a significant body of compelling scientific evident indicating serious hazards from their use’.

Professor Bruce Armstrong from Sydney’s University School of Public Health presented a survey of the Interphone Study released in May 2010 on mobile phone radiation and brain tumors.  Armstrong headed the Australian arm of the 13 Country International Study co-ordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).  Armstrong has finally admitted that people were more likely to develop tumors on the side of the head used for calls and in the part of the head (temporal lobes) that would absorb radiation from mobile phone calls, showing a ‘degree of consistency suggesting heavy mobile phone use may be contributing to brain tumors’.  Dr Armstrong even admitted there were a number of biases that could have affected the results of the study such as:-

  1. A high rate of nonparticipation in people suggesting that participating controls were more likely to be mobile phone users than not, which could have skewed the results.
  2. Subjects could often not recall the amount of their mobile phone use or the side of the head they had used for calls.
  3. Very heavy users of five hours a day were excluded from the study as that amount of phone use was deemed implausible.
  4. People who already had tumors or had died of tumors were excluded from the study.
Dr. Armstrong admitted that Dr. Lennart Hardell’s team study of 2005-2006 was directly comparable with the Interphone Study, but Hardell’s study found significantly higher rates of brain tumors for long term mobile phone users.  Armstrong suggests that manufacturers should continue to reduce SAR (specific absorption rates) of phones and ensure that consumers can access this information when purchasing phones.  He also advised them to ‘make meaningful information about emissions from base stations available’, for example, comparing them to exposures from mobile phones.

Researchers Amanda Johansson and Colleagues from Sweden have found that people react to mobile phone radiation with different patterns of symptoms.  They collected data from four groups of people – the mobile phone group, the general EMR group, the EHS group, and the population group. The mobile phone group tended to be younger, predominately male, with high stress levels.  Their most common symptoms reported were warmth, burning skin, concentration problems, tingling and tightness.

The EHS group reported symptoms for longer than the mobile phone group, their health was generally poorer and many of them were unemployed, on sick leave, or had to leave their jobs because symptoms were too severe.  They reported a poor quality of life.  Most common symptoms were general discomfort, fatigue, sleeping problems, concentration problems, dizziness and exhaustion, high levels of worry, depression and felt insecure about the future.

The population group experienced symptoms of warmth on or near the ear, burning skin, headaches and fatigue.  Nearly all of these participants failed to associate their symptoms with EMR.

Half the mobile phone group believed they were not sensitive to EMR even though they experienced symptoms when using a mobile phone.  This suggests that symptoms of EMR and RFR exposure are being under recognized by the public and that current estimates of EHS are lower than what is already a reality.

Scientific Research re-analysed:

This government department is still not acting to reduce our high standards that don’t protect anyone.  The standard has been at a bureaucratic stalemate for many years.  It is two years since the Working Group that was developing a new standard met and the Consultative Group which was allegedly involved in the process.  No draft has been seen since 2006.  ARPANSA has no comment on the progress of the document and does not know when it will be released.  In the meantime Australians continue to suffer under the excessively high allowable levels of radiation.

ARPANSA has for the very first time, issued precautionary advice encouraging parents to minimize children’s exposure to radiation from mobile phones.  ARPANSA advises:

  1. The most effective way to minimise exposure is to increase the distance between the mobile phone, or the antenna, and the user.
  2. Users should pay attention to manufacturer’s advice regarding spacing from the body if mobile phones are to be attached to belts or placed in pockets.
  3. Not to use a mobile phone when a normal wired land line phone is available.
  4. Sending a text message instead of making a voice call.
  5. Limiting the duration of the calls that are made from a mobile phone.
  6. Only using a mobile phone in an open area, not inside a vehicle.

The NSW Government announced new State planning laws regarding the placement of mobile phone antennas and towers on 16th July 2010 in order to streamline planning approvals.  The new policy reads like a Telco’s wish list which gives the Telcos greater ability to put up more towers while Councils and the public have less say on the matter.  Not surprisingly, the Government Department of Planning’s new Telecommunications planning regime was praised by the Mobile Phone Carriers Forum.

The Australian Federal Government’s election in August 2010.  On the lead up to it, Candidates for both major parties were joining community campaigners and promising support against an Optus mobile phone tower in the electorate of Bennelong.  Labor MP Maxine McKew spoke to Communications Minister Stephen Conroy for help and Liberal candidate John Alexander took part in a tower protest.  (SMH, 13.08.10.)

SMART METERS – in The United States

The installation of wireless smart meters requires a fourth generation (4G) telecommunications network in addition to the networks currently providing coverage for the operation of mobile phones.  These smart meters are the first step which will connect energy electrical devices in the home to the network.  This will involve the installation of a transmitter on each appliance (either by the consumer or manufacturer) which will transmit RF radiation through the home to the smart meter.  Sandy Maurer from the EMF Safety Network says smart meters are making people very sick.  ‘We urge the CPUC (Californian Public Utilities Commission) to put public health before utility profits’. ‘Anti-smart meter protest signs and bumper stickers have proliferated’, she said.  The Administrations and Councils of Scarsborough, Fairfax, Watsonville, Sanford, Novato and Cape Elizabeth all unanimously agreed to prohibit the installation of smart meters and Santa Cruz County passed similar restrictions for a year long moratorium on them.

Officials in the cities of Novato and San Francisco and supervisors in Santa Cruz and Marin Counties have all asked the California Public Utilities Commission for a moratorium on Smart Meter installation pending further tests on electromagnetic and microwave radiation emissions.

In 2010 Assemblyman Jared Huffman from Marin County introduced a bill that would require utility companies to provide wired meters where residents objected to wireless devices.  The California Public Utilities Commission, after strong lobbying from residents and councils, agreed to investigate whether individuals can be given wired rather that wireless meters.  Two members of the Commission have already indicated that they support this option.  In November 2010 Pacific Gas and Electric Co also agreed to consider this option.

On 4th January 2011 the Board of Supervisors in the County of Marin, north of San Francisco, voted unanimously for a one-year ordinance against the installation of smart meters.  In the ordinance, the Board referred to concerns about radiation from the meters, privacy concerns, and inaccurate readings from smart meters that had drastically increased electricity bills.  It noted that federal standards do not protect against ‘chronic long-term exposure’ which it linked with ‘sleep disorders, irritability, short term memory loss, headache, anxiety, nausea, DNA breaks, abnormal cell growth, cancer, premature aging etc.’ Because of the potential health risks of the technology, the Board denied permission for the installation of the smarts meters pending a study of the effect of the technology.

SMART METERS – in Australia

In NSW where utilities are preparing for the rollout, state legislation gives utility companies wanting to install this infrastructure exemption from council regulations.  When a telecommunications carrier constructs a base station or tower, it is required to comply with ‘The Code for the Deployment of Radio-Communications Network Infrastructure’, which stipulates requirements for installing and consulting with local communities.  (Note that this is no protection from the microwave radiation as these Australian  standards as thousands of times too high).  However, this code does not apply to electrical utility carriers.  This means that there are no legal obligations on utility companies to engage in best-practice consultation with communities, to consider ‘sensitive’ locations when siting infrastructure or to minimize EMR and microwave radiation emissions.

The radiation from the new smart meter is in addition to – meaning extra on top of the current burden of radiation that society already bears from other technologies, which will all have a cumulative effect on humans.  The smart meter grid requires the installation of  fourth generation wireless networks.  There will be up to 2 million devices on the Energy Australian Network alone which are in addition to the multiple telecommunications networks, paging services, Wi-Fi networks and other broadcast services already in existence.  Information can be safely relayed across powerlines or by fibre optic cabling networks which would avoid the need for radiating transmitters on homes and throughout the community.

Australia’s Energy Networks Association has a policy of ‘prudent avoidance’ (in other words, keeping exposures low where possible).  However, this policy applies only to the electromagnetic fields from electricity lines and current meters and not to the high frequency microwave radiation from smart meter technology.  Microwave radiation has been associated with brain tumors, genetic damage and changes to the body consistent with ill health at levels far below international standards.  Many scientific studies have linked these levels of microwave radiation with initially getting depression, irritability, sleep problems, memory and concentration problems, and headaches before more serious side effects eventually occur.

Utility companies claim that emissions comply with international standards, but international standards do not protect against the sort of radiation emitted and pulsed out by this equipment.  They do not protect against cumulative, non heating, long-term effects, nor do they make allowance for individual susceptibility.
The evidence for adverse health effects from RF and microwave radiation is currently very strong and growing stronger with each new study said Dr. David Carpenter from the University at Albany.

Concerns about Privacy with smart meters

Dr Roger Clarke, Chairman of the Australian Privacy Foundation, said that he was ‘seriously concerned’ about the privacy implications of this technology.  ‘There is little doubt that most designs are highly privacy invasive’ he said. Not only will the information collected by the utilities companies provide information about the absence of people from their property, but it will provide patterns of usage that will allow observers to infer much about what is actually going on inside someone’s home.

Dr. Clarke expressed astonishment that electrical utilities have not consulted the Privacy Foundation about the installation of this technology and said that they don’t seem to have a basic understanding of the privacy law or privacy considerations of the public.  Dr Clarke said this is a serious oversight.

In June 2010 Dallas saw the gathering of world renowned experts present the latest scientific evidence on electromagnetic hypersensitivity.  This condition is the extreme reaction to some electromagnetic frequencies, in the same way that people react to one or more chemicals.  Symptoms include headaches, fatigue, pain, nausea, depression, burning, tingling.  Some people are affected so severely that they are unable to tolerate being near technology of any sort, which means they are unable to live in modern cities.  As a result, many have been obliged to live in secluded areas to obtain relief from their symptoms.

Dr. William Rea is Director of the Environmental Health Centre at Dallas, which provides a clean environment for people with environmental sensitivities and offers accommodation for long term sufferers.  He has treated many people with this condition and observes that it is becoming more frequent in recent years, particularly since the advent of WiFi technology.

Dr. Kaye Kilburn (MD) says, ‘Correlation of electromagnetic fields, power lines, and video display terminals with serious health problems, childhood cancers, cardiovascular disease, coronary artery occlusion, brain tumours and fetal abnormalities suggest casual links’.

Dr. Devra Davis from the University of Pittsburgh spoke about the inadequacy of international standards for mobile phone and tower radiation.

Prof. Andrew Marino from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Centre began his renowned career working with pioneer EMF researcher Dr. Robert Becker.  Marino told the conference that electromagnetic fields interact with and are sensed by all living things.  People have a magnetic sense by measuring evoked potentials (a response of the nervous system) following exposures to low or high frequency fields.  Marino says the body’s response to these signals is non-linear meaning it doesn’t always respond in the same way.

Dr. Gilbert de Paula is medical director of the Clinic of Allergy Nutrican and Environmental Medicine in Manus, Brazil.  He says EMS is linked to an imbalance of calcium and magnesium levels in the body.

Dr. Kou Sakabe from Tokai University in Japan described EHS as a neurological disorder that primarily affects the central nervous and autonomic nervous systems.

Dr. Magda Havas, Associate Professor in Environmental Studies at Trent University in Toronto described tests that can be used to demonstrate reactions to electromagnetic radiation that are useful for testing people who claim to be hypersensitive.  They are:

  1. Exposing a person to a source of dirty electricity using a treadmill which also elevates blood sugar levels.
  2. During or after exposure to EMR, monitoring symptoms of MS such as tremors.
  3. Monitoring heart rate variability of people before and after exposure.
  4. Live blood test analysis showing changes in Rolex formation after exposure to computer and mobile phone radiation.
  5. Skin rashes for people who sit in front of a CFL light globe for 20 minutes.  Dr. Havas says ‘this is probably man’s worst invention, as the globes produce radiofrequency signals, UV and dirty electricity’.

Walsh Research Institute -  Sydney Conference – Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity
People with electromagnetic hypersensitivity have had relief with biochemical assessment and treatments by practitioners trained by Dr Bill Walsh from the Walsh Research Institute in the US.  On 2nd April, 2011 Dr. Walsh and his team will conduct a one day conference on ‘Autistic Spectrum Disorders – Mental and Behavioural Disorders’ from 10am to 5pm at the Rydges World Square Hotel, 389 Pitt Street (Cnr Liverpool St), Sydney.  Dr Walsh will also conduct patient assessments and medical practitioner training from 27th March to 5th April in Sydney.  For bookings see

In the United Kingdom in 2007 Eastbourne Planning Committee refused permission for a mobile phone tower unless and until the telco could prove it to be safe for bees.

Ulrich Warnke said ‘Bees and other insects, just as bird, use the earth’s magnetic field and high frequency electromagnetic energy such as light.  They accomplish orientation and navigation by means of free radicals as well as a simultaneously reacting magnetic conglomerate.  Man’s technically produced artificial electromagnetic radiation in the megahertz range and magnetic impulses in the low frequency range persistently disturb the natural orientation and navigation mechanism created by evolution’.

George Carlo said ‘there is no doubt that the science supports the explosion of EMR exposures in these ecosystems is having an impact on the disappearing birds.  Based on the mechanism of harm we already know to be happening, the impact includes the bird’s ability to navigate because of EMR disruption of magnetic and magnetic grid related physiology, immune compromise, neurophysiologic distruption and impacts on species food supplies and other survival necessities’.

Dr Gerald Goldberg said in 2007 ‘with bees, so the same effect is being observed in humans, note the rise in autism, memory disturbances and related disorders.  The global alteration of our environment without regard to the limitations of our biology will have profound effects for all life on this planet.  This is a timely and urgent matter than involves everyone’.

Warnke said in 2007 ‘The consequences which were repeatedly predicted over many years by the critics of this artifical electromagnetic radiation development should no longer be overlooked.  Bees and other insects disappear, birds avoid certain places and are disorientated in other places.  Man suffers from malfunctions and diseases, and as these become hereditary, and passes them on as damages to the next generation’. (Warnke, “Bees, Birds and People, The Destruction of Nature as a Result of Electrosmog”)

Balmori presented a review on the impact of radiofrequency radiation including microwave radiation emitted from phone towers on wildlife in 2008. He said:

  1. Electromagnetic radiation is a form of environmental pollution that can harm wildlife.
  2. The continuous radiation emissions from mobile phone antennas could inflict long-term harm on certain species, like reduction of their natural defences, deterioration of their health, problems in reproduction, and reduction of their useful territory through habitat deterioration.
  3. Electromagnetic radiation can exert an adversive response in rats, bats and birds – as per studies.
  4. Microwave and radiofrequency pollution constitutes a potential cause for the decline of animal populations and deterioration of health of plants living near phone towers.

The US Fisheries and Wildlife Service called for the need for research in its 2007 Congressional Staff Report: “Concerns over Potential Radiation Impacts of Cellular Communications Towers on Migratory Birds and other Wildlife: Research Opportunities”.

Veterinary accounts of detrimental effects on animal species from cell phone towers cannot be attributed to psychosomatic illnesses as a few people still try to suggest.   Dr. Schmid, Bavarian Govt. Veterinary; Wenzel -  says a correlation has been established between base station radiation and the illnesses of dairy herds, horses, and poultry and the decline of various species of fauna, also birds, insects, spiders, bats and frogs which can all be regarded as bio-indicators, being naturally more susceptible to radiation penetration.

Cindy Sage, one of the signatories of the BioInitiative Report says in ‘Reviews on Environmental Health’ that the atmosphere of our planet on which all life depends is called the ‘Commons’.  It is a shared resource that belongs to everyone.  To degrade the ‘Common’ is to compromise the quality of life of all creation.  This ‘Common’ property is being sold by governments and dramatically altered by the introduction of wireless technologies that radiate across the planet.  ‘Wireless signals from broadcast and communications technologies are crowding out and overpowering the ‘Commons’ of air space which is being altered in unprecedented ways that have enormous consequences for life on earth’, she says.  No-one is monitoring these changes to our atmosphere and no-one is limiting the extent to which the ‘Commons’ can be altered.  Today, we are using up the wireless ‘Commons’ by saturating it with more than 10 billion times as much of this electro-pollutant exposure as was present during human evolution’, Sage writes.  What will be the effects on our bodies and our environment?  The last bastion of safety for humans – their home – is already beginning to crumble.  The introduction of ‘smart meters’ places radiation-emitting technology in every home and neighbourhood – even if people have kept free of this technology in their homes so far.   The Smart Meters emit a very high peak pulsed wireless signal that will penetrate every nook and cranny of our living space she says, comparing it to exposure from base station transmitters.  Sage says ‘the air belongs to us all – and cannot sustain unlimited pollution by radiating technologies.

CFL LIGHT GLOBES – health problems

A registered nurse shares her experiences of health problems following the installation of compact fluorescent globes in her home – by Audrey Aspeling.  see

Note that CFLs contain mercury – one of the most toxic materials on earth – which is released when these globes are broken.  In landfill, heat and bacteria convert mercury into methyl and diethyl mercury which are toxic and volatile.  CFLs emit a high frequency flicker which can adversely affect people.  CFL’s have been shown to have high electric fields.  Electrical engineer John Lincoln compared the magnetic fields of three types of light globes all at around 100 watts and all close to their surfaces.  He found that:-

The CFL globe is now in most homes around Australia as the incandescent globe has been withdrawn from sale.
J. Bakos from Hungary says CFL’s generate very high electric fields – his testing showed they range from fields of 42 V/m (volts per meter) to 216 V/m.   (Bakos J et al, Radiat Prot Dosimetry, Oct 5, 2010.)

Human Phone Tower: Mobile phone base stations could become less of a blight on the landscape if scientists from Queens University in Belfast have their way.  The researchers have developed a concept for mobile communications that allows people to connect directly with each other which reduces the need for the base stations and towers.  This technology comes at a cost for users as the network proposed by the Belfast team means phone users would each wear wireless sensors on their body which would receive radio-frequency radiation in the same way that base stations receive signals which is basically making these people into a human phone tower. (International Business Times, 20/1/2011).

Technology changing the brain:  For years researchers have studied the effects of electromagnetic radiation emitted by modern technology on the brain in order to determine its impacts on health.  However, there is another way in which technology may be impacting the brain – its effects on thinking.

American Writer Nicholas Carr, in his new book, ‘The Shallows: How the Internets’ Changing the Way We Think, Read and Remember’. Carr says he began writing the book as a result of his own experience with technology.  He said ‘I was loosing my own capacity for concentration and contemplation – my mine seemed hungry for constant stimulation, for quick hits of information.  I felt perpectually distracted.  He says the internet has affected the way that people process and understand information.  Studies have shown, that people who were heavy media multi-taskers did worse on a battery of cognitive tests and the people who were distracted by emails and updates understood less than people who were not.

Dr. Norman Doidge has brought to public attention science showing that the brain has the quality of plasticity – meaning it changes in response to its experiences.  In his book, ‘The Brain that Changes Itself’, Doidge shows that when the brain’s neutral pathways are damaged, it is able to forge new pathways, allowing parts of the brain to literally take over the functions of damaged neurons.  Plastic change, caused by our experience, travels deep into the brain and ultimately even into our genes, moulding them as well.
(Doidge, N, ‘The Brain that Changes Itself, Melb. Scribe, 2007, p.92).

Baroness Professor Susan Greenfield is a neuroscientist at Oxford University and like Carr she believes that technology may be changing the brains of users.  In a September 2010 interview on ABC TV Lateline, Professor Greenfield spoke about the possible consequences of intensive internet use by children.
(ABC Lateline, 14.09.2010.)

Australian Statistics: Fertility in cattle and dairy herds has been steadily declining over the past thirteen years since 1997.  In 2010 fertility was down by 18% and falling which has cost $89 million to the Victorian Industry. Coincidentally – or not – the year 1997 was when the analogue communications system was changed over to the digital communications system and tens of thousands of new towers began to be erected. (Channel 9 Win TV News, Fri 13.08.10.)

RF Consultant Brett Loule said that existing RF standards do not protect against the increasing number of RF frequencies and interactions with powerlines.  Linesmen in a cherry picker noticed heating in their forearms within seconds of beginning work to replace insulators on high voltage powerlines.  Moule said this problem will continue to wet worse, as the RF fields increase in the air.  Dr. Andrew Wood undertook to bring this problem to the attention of ARPANSA.

Repacholi who betrayed the obligations of his office when he was in charge of the World Health Organization’s study programme on electromagnetic fields and also was ex-President-Founder of ICNIRP.
